Success stories: In their own words...

Terri: “I lived at TRY house and then I got my own place next door. I have lived there for about four years. When I first moved to my own place, I didn’t know how to cook but with the help of my friends and TR staff I can now cook hot dogs, macaroni and cheese and fix my own meals. Not neat-o stuff but simple things. I like going on outings and cleaning my apartment. TR has helped me have lots of friends.”

Transitional Resources success story of Angelito

Angelito: “I have made a lot of good friends at TR. TR is helping me support myself. The staff here are good. In the last year I have moved into my own apartment and started volunteering at the Food Bank. I feel independent and I am learning how to take care of myself by doing my laundry, shopping, and cleaning. I have also gotten a part-time job. My job is kind of fun because I am making new friends and talking to my co-workers. I feel like I have a new family—both at TR and at work.”

Transitional Resources success story of James

James: “I was living on the streets, sleeping on people’s couches and in their cars. Then I moved into TRY House. After living in TRY house for almost a year, I was able to move out and get my own apartment. My advice to others working on their recovery is to keep a positive attitude. You will go more places. TRY house has helped me a lot and I have seen it help other people. After losing your mind it is a great place to recover.”

Transitional Resources success story of Matt

Matt: “ I have been involved with the TRY house since my release from the Western State Hospital in 1998. Since then, managing my illness has become a full-time job. Drawing on my skills as both a warrior, and an artist, I began a self-incepted course of treatment that involved both exercise and mental conditioning. Mind and body are so intertwined, that one cannot be perfected or improved without the other. My best advice to you in this mental health circuit, is simply to generate enough will power, in the face of your personal obstacles, that you can overcome them.”

Transitional Resources success story about Parish

Parish: “Before coming to TR, I had 10 years of trying to cope with my illness while living on the streets. To learn how to cope I had to reside at Western State Hospital. I came to TRY house to learn life skills and how to communicate as a young adult. My goal is to get my own apartment and I am close to reaching my goal. I spend my time writing and participating in social groups to get the experience that I missed while I was on the streets.”

Transitional Resources success story about James

Tim: “I have been with TR for five years now. I feel like I am well on the road to recovery with my job and my support here at TR. I worked as a janitor for three years before moving to the mobile work crew. I like the people I work with and I like working outdoors.”
